Winter is traditionally the time of year when we are plagued with more viral illnesses. Why this happens is the topic of another blog! This year is compounded with COVID-19 virus and I'd like to take a few minutes to discuss what we can do to stop a virus.

First of all, I strongly recommend that everyone has a bottle of the liquid Structured Silver. You can pour this into a nasal spray bottle - undiluted. When you are feeling like you are getting sick (or every time you get home) you can squirt it up your nose and it'll kill bacteria and viruses in your nasal cavity. This has kept my immediate family healthy all year.

We have 4 opportunities to stop a virus:

  1. Blocking viral acquisition and Targeting the virus directly.

  2. Blocking virus replication.

  3. Supporting immune function

  4. Supporting cellular and whole body health

Targeting the virus directly. Targeting the virus directly has been the focus of medical practice and public health efforts through sanitation, disease-specific antiviral drugs, and (more recently) vaccination. Several nutrients and botanicals are also very effective effective for directly targeting viral infections.

  • Selenium. Selenium is very safe and antiviral benefits through several avenues, two of which are blocking viral mutation and also blocking viral replication. Also very helpful for proper thyroid function. 200 mcg daily

  • Vitamin A. Preventative 10,000 IU. Acute 200,000 IU for the first 2 days. then 4 doses of 50,000 IU. Don't overdose.

  • Vitamin D3. The majority of people in the US do not synthesize sufficient Vitamin D in order to meet physiological requirements. Preventative 4,000-10,000 IU daily. Acute 100,000 IU first day if deficient; 20,000-50,000 IU while sick (up to 7 days). Monitor labs.

  • Vitamin C. Preventative 2 grams thrice daily = 6g/d. Acute divided dosing to bowel tolerance.

  • Zinc. Preventative 15-20 mg/day. Acute 50 mg/day up to 100 mg/day. Don't overdose.

Blocking virus replication. Preventing viral replication is the goal of many antiviral drugs, while several nutrients can provide a similar effect. Viruses are unable to self-replicate and must therefore rely on the host genetic machinery for their replication. A few nutrients that have proven clinical effectiveness against viral infections include:

  • Vitamin D3. The majority of people in the US do not synthesize sufficient Vitamin D in order to meet physiological requirements. Preventative 4,000-10,000 IU daily. Acute 100,000 IU first day if deficient; 20,000-50,000 IU while sick (up to 7 days). Monitor labs.

  • Zinc. Preventative 15-20 mg/day. Acute 50 mg/day up to 100 mg/day. Don't overdose.

  • NAC. NAC is a potent antioxidant. As the precursor to glutathione intracellular synthesis of glutathione. Glutathione is a critical component of the immune system and detoxification. Preventative 1000-1500 mg/day, preferably divided doses away from food. Acute: oral up to ~6 GRAMS per day in divided doses.

  • Lipoic acid. Alpha-Lipoic acid is a potent antioxidant and a critical cofactor for many enzyme complexes. Unlike the actions of other antioxidants, including vitamins C and E, which are restricted to aqueous tissues, and fatty tissues/membranes, ALA has activity in both fat and water-soluble tissues. Preventative 100 mg twice daily. Acute 300 mg 3-4x/day (I have a product that also includes Vitamin C for $23.50)

Support immune function. Without proper nutrition, the immune system is slanted imultaneously toward underactivity (immunosuppression) and hyperactivity manifesting as inflammation and autoimmune.

  • Selenium. Selenium is very safe and antiviral benefits through several avenues, two of which are blocking viral mutation and also blocking viral replication. Also very helpful for proper thyroid function. 200 mcg daily

  • Fish Oil

  • Vitamin D3. The majority of people in the US do not synthesize sufficient Vitamin D in order to meet physiological requirements. Preventative 4,000-10,000 IU daily. Acute 100,000 IU first day if deficient; 20,000-50,000 IU while sick (up to 7 days). Monitor labs.

  • Zinc. Preventative 15-20 mg/day. Acute 50 mg/day up to 100 mg/day. Don't overdose.

  • Vitamin A. Preventative 10,000 IU. Acute 200,000 IU for the first 2 days. then 4 doses of 50,000 IU. Don't overdose.

  • Vitamin C. Preventative 2 grams thrice daily = 6g/d. Acute divided dosing to bowel tolerance.

Supporting cellular health. Viral infections lead to mitochondrial dysfunction and endoplasmic reticulum stress. Mitochondrias are the energy powerhouse of the cell and it is believed that we have 1000-2000 of them in every cell in the body. When they are "tired" we are tired. Symptoms of this cellular stress include prolonged inflammation and fatigue. In addition to a low carb diet and exercise, I recommend:

  • Vitamin A. Preventative 10,000 IU. Acute 200,000 IU for the first 2 days. then 4 doses of 50,000 IU. Don't overdose.

  • Vitamin D3. The majority of people in the US do not synthesize sufficient Vitamin D in order to meet physiological requirements. Preventative 4,000-10,000 IU daily. Acute 100,000 IU first day if deficient; 20,000-50,000 IU while sick (up to 7 days). Monitor labs.

  • Zinc. Preventative 15-20 mg/day. Acute 50 mg/day up to 100 mg/day. Don't overdose.

  • Vitamin C. Preventative 2 grams thrice daily = 6g/d. Acute divided dosing to bowel tolerance.

Preventative 100 mg twice daily. Acute 300 mg 3-4x/day (I have a product that also includes Vitamin C for $23.50)

As you can see, there are a few products that support 3 of the 4 viral blocking actions. Only Vitamin D is a "Home Run" and can stop viruses on all four fronts.

I carry all of these products in my clinic. Don't hesitate to contact me! No shipping! Many of these products are liquids that are better absorbed at the liposomal level. You can contact me via phone at 303-243-1143 or email jessica@empowered-biofeedback.com.
